“Addiction and Mental Health Struggles:  Warning Signs and Community Resources” presented by Brendan McDonough, former Granite Mountain Hotshot and founder of Holdfast Recovery

After surviving the Yarnell Hill Wildfire and an unfathomable loss of 19 firefighter "brothers" in 2013,  Brendan suffered from bouts of deep depression, alcohol abuse and intractable Post-Traumatic Stress.  The inspiration to keep living and seek help came from his family and thoughts of the 19 firefighters' ultimate sacrifice.  Through counseling and faith he was able to overcome these challenges.  He has since made it his life’s mission to serve others.

Brendan will share his personal story and provide guidance on how to identify employees who may be struggling with the same types of challenges that he faced—warning signs and how to approach them.  Also, he will discuss the many resources available in our community where employees may seek help.  As human resources professionals, we know that good employees may succumb to addiction and mental health issues, and making them aware of resources may prevent a subsequent slide in job performance and potential loss of employment.
